widening wheels
i've heard about people buying steels, cutting them in half then welding a few extra inches into the middle.
does anyone know anything about this? how much it would cost, who can do it etc, as i would really like a pair of 8inch g60 steels for my mk1.
Cheers

Hi - it's called 'banding' and I'm not sure if it's legal or not (?)

Hello , banding is now against the law BUT its not against the law to have them . This was a cheap way of getting wide wheels before alloys became common place . I know of people with buggies still having them done but if you do go down this route BE CAREFUL as a poorly done job can be down right dangerous and bestowe your wagon with some interesting handling techniques . A better and easier way is to find another set of wider steel wheels (same diameter) off another make of car , old jags wheels were sometimes wide 15's, cut the centres out and replace with your centers but this still needs to be done properly . G60 steels are as wide as most people say a golf needs and quite cheap off vw a whole set cost me ?160 including vat .
