which shocks?

hi i've had my golf mk1 fail the mot today :banghead: . its failed on the two front shock absorbers. i want to know whats a good set of shocks to go for. at the momnet its got lowering springs ( lowerd 40mm) on all round which are ok but not great think there just cheap ones (they where on when i got the car). i've been looking on ebay and theres loads on there and there not  bad prices. all i want is a good set that dont' cost to much as i'm just a poor chef

also would i be better off replacing all 4 or can i just get away with doing the front 2.  please help i'm clue less when it comes to suspension

You should be able to go to any local motor factors and get two new inserts for your front units.

Just changing these two will be fine, it will not affect the rear of the car, in an ideal word yes change all four and get some new springs, but we are then talking 180-250 easy.

But just replacing the front end, if you do the work, should only cost ?40-50.

Just get it back on the road, then if you fancy it…..go for a whole new set up!

Reading your first post i looked on ebay and was going to say those delphi, inserts for ?15 would sort you out . But now you want to improve ride so really looking front/rear and the springs and ?100 aint gonna do it.

if your keeping to standard inserts get some Bilstein gas ones, superb quality and only about ?25 each, the insert is just that, after you disasemble the front legs off the car, using a spring compressor before you attempt to remove the top mounts!!!! very important if you like your teeth!! there is a collar at the top of the leg where the piston goes into the leg, undo that and remove the old unit and insert the new, its worth cleaning the tube out and putting some copper grease in the tube whilst its apart too, re assemble springs and top mounts then bolt em back on, its a few hour job and straight forward....dont forget to get camber and tracking done afterwards as it will be way out!
