Which gearbox for G60 conversion?

Hi all, im just collecting all the parts i need to fit a G60 engine into my mk1. ive read the guide and very helpful it was, im going to use a spare golf engine loom incase want to remove and put the standard engine back. and this leads me to the question- i was thinking about using a spare 1.8 gti gearbox that i have so i can use the standard linkages and mounts, also ive seen some were that this has been done with 4th and 5th gears from a diesel fitted to alter the ratios. any body know if this is correct and what diesel box was used?

Im doing the g60 conversion in 6 weeks just getting the parts atm, im going for the mk2 16v box but you can also use the mk3 gti box without any mods as far as im aware other than drive sharfts, i know someone who has done the conversion without cutting into the mk1 loom just incase they wanna change back, im going to be popping round his house soon to get the info needed to have mine done.
we shall see :)

I used a corrado box, and converted to cable change, you do loose a bit of time on the gear change (if you are doing 0 - 60) but can easily handle the power.

There is another guy on here that has used the mk2 16v box and regretted it, could not get a decent top end.

I originally tried a mk3 diesel box as recommended by a VW specialist but could not get a clutch to fit as the spline size is different.

The G60 loom is what you need to use and ditch the mk1 engine loom. you will never convert the car back, there is too much stuff you need on the G60 loom. ISV, lamda, etc

Good luck

Cheers for that ant, im going to use a spare mk1 engine loom and the g60 loom as in pauls how to guide just in case i need to go back to the old engine. there is a mk3 diesel which uses the same splines but there a bit thin on the ground and im not sure what the code is or what to look for. i have been told that its the one with the rod gear change instead of the cable change? :dontknow:

Yes that sounds like the one i had diesel mk3 box on rod change, cant really remember as it was some yeard ago i did the conversion. the diesel clutch was a smaller diameter overall and when i found the right overall size in a passat clutch the splines where the wrong size.

If you do use the corrado box you will need gearbox mount conversion bracket (try someone like G-werks)
