which 2.0 for my mk1?

searched the forum and i cant find a definate answer  :(
iv got a mk1 5door gl looking to put a 2.0 8v in.
iv currently got a high lift cam, 4 branch exhaust, and bike carbs for a mk1 1.8 gti engine and a 2y gearbox.
if seen people use mk3 gti engines, are they a 'tall block' would my 4 branch fit this ok?
do i have to use the mk3 alternator etc?
which engine code is best to go for, im currently looking to get the ABK from audi 80 is this the only short block available?
sorry if i'v confused you  :)
thanks for help in advance.

the 3a block is short 2.0 8v, but very rare now! some 4 branches wont fit the tall block, just fit an oem mk1/cabby/rocco gti 6 bolt manifold/downpipe

thanks mate,
do you know which cars had the 3a fitted?

Just fit a more modern, more readily available tall block, dosnt cause any problems that are not relatively easy to overcome.

earlier audis had the 3a, which is why its quite uncommon now. as above just fit a tall block, and choose your exhaust carefully. personally I've had nothing but wailing and knashing of teeth from 4 branches, never fit right.  oem all the way, they flow just fine

3as are found in Audi 80s, around 1990

So is there any 'preferable' mk3 engines? I'm looking to do the same conversion on my Rivage Gti. What parts do you keep from the mk3?

And while the engines out, what parts are worth replacing?

Clutch
Water pump
Clutch cable
Accelerator cable

they're all the same really. the 2e code lump is better for digi applications but only becasue the dizzy will work with it. with k-jet/carb the dizzy will need changing no matter which block you get. preferable engines would be low milers or those out of automatic passats owned by old men :D

bits Id replace are all the plastic flanges (fit MK1 metal items where possible) rocker cover seal, all belts + tensioner. thats about it really!  if you plan to run the mk3 managment replace ecu temp sensor and lambda probe, if going with a later engine then replace the crank sensor too

If you use k-jet, can you use the crank sensor..?? I was planning on just making a plug for that hole.. If, were should the crank sensor connect?

no use for a crank sensor on k-jet. just chop the wire off and leave the sensor in the hole to block it off :)
