What's the largest & most modern small block that will f

As above, what's the largest and most modern small block vw engine which will fit straight in to a small block Mk1 (i.e. utilising the existing engine mounts)?

Doing some research into the cheapest way to make a quick small block engine, and I'd like to start with an engine which has the lowest mileage and greatest capacity available.

I'm thinking of running it on carbs, so a modern ECU won't be an issue.

Any opinions would be very welcome…

Thanks

I'm aware VW took the small block up to 1.6 in the 90's, think they also made DOHC versions. Assume you will be able to bolt the mk1 small block mounts on to it - engine will have been fitted to a sub frame and mounts differ.

There's a guy on the Polo forum with a small block 1.6 in his mk3, so should fit into the mk1. Plenty of Berg Cup mk2 and 3 Polo's have 16V's in them, but there's a discussion on Club Polo about how much/little of the engine originates from the later mk4 Polo.

Thanks guys - didn't know they went all the way up to a 1.6 - that'd be nice and spicy with twin carbs 8)

Should I be looking in the scrappy for a 1.6 out of a Mk3, or did they continue it into the Mk4 Polo too?

I think it's a mk4 engine. You can get upto 200hp out of the 1.3 16v but I dare'nt think of the cost.

Apparently the 1.6 16V from the mk5 Polo will fit and is an all alloy design.

Hmmm very interesting… Don't think I fancy attempting 200bhp from a 1.3 - don't think it would last more than about 1000 miles anyway!

But an all alloy 1.6 would be very cool indeed… I've had a brief look on Club Polo for info on small block engines, but are there any other sites you would also recommend?

Thanks in advance

didnt know they done a 1.3 16v

anyway i asked about the 1.6 16v before and the club lupo guys reckon its the same mounts as the small engined mk1 golfs etc.

VW never made a 1.3 16v but some dutch companies made head to fit.

The drivers side mount will fit straight on but only two bolts line up, u can run it fine with these two as some people do or modify your mount to fit correctly.

If your get a 16v with the small rocker cover and coil packs to save money and  :banghead:  on custom ignition i believe on the end of the inlet cam there is a drive, flick the blanking plug out the head and a hydro head'd polo distributor will fit :)

I was going to fit a 1.4/6 16v out of a lupo into my mk1 using the above and also a set of bike carbs meaning it would be alot cheaper to build. i have now gone down the polo gt route 5sp box and bike carbs but if i ever find a cheap lupo gti engine i wouldnt mind throwing that in :)

Cool - thanks for the tips.

Don't suppose you know whether any VW 8v hydraulic heads would fit the small 1.6 block? I'm not convinced a 1.6 is big enough to warrant 16 valves, especially as I prefer low-end grunt to high-end power.

Thanks

The 1.6 is an 8V.

as yeha said, but you have a choice. 16v is out of a lupo/polo gti and the 8v is out of a mk4 1.6 polo (and some other cars)

Ah ok… Do both the 1.6 8v and 16v engines have an alloy block? I'm really keen to keep the weight down as much as possible.

Thanks for your help guys
