Forged pistons in themselves don't add power but permit a higher power output reliably, ie from other components. Also if combined with balancing the bottom end allows a higher rpm, which in itself will yield more power (if other things are set up properly).
The problem with modifying the 1.6 (and 1.8, to some extent) is that although you can do mods to add power, it will be at the top end so isn't that useable on the road, but becomes more useful eg track days, drag racing, etc, hence the popularity of engine conversions and bigger capacity (or 'off the shelf - eg 1.8T or G60 - turbo or supercharging).

143bhp - do they take the manufacturer's quoted figure the engine came from eg if an engine conversion?
If its achieved with modifications, how do they know its only a 30% increase? What happens if you do modifications and it results in less power, or hardly any increase? etc

car color, type ,engine power, vin, etc is wroten in car licence document and when i try a conversion, i need to buy an engine with invoice and licence (even its used engine, need invoice and engine licence from seller) for make it legal and new engine informations is wroten in licence. When i make an application for conversion old and new engine specs are compared (see both engine licence) and power increase percent is calculated and if its more than %30, its not permitted. I know some europan countried that doesnt matter none of this and conversion is very easy. For this add power engine is better than conversion.
which is cost effective - almost same, 1.8t engine, ms ecu, electricity system etc. is almost 3.500-4000 euro. i think you buy all car ( passat or golf 1.8t) this money.
here all kind of vw and audi cars and parts exist, new or used.
conversion :new engine licence need.
mod: i wont tell ( and they dont know this ) if i mod and add power.
sorry for bad english. i hope you can understand.
thanks.
