what power outputs have you 16v guys got??

hi :)

really enjoying my 2l 8v conversion at the min,  its kicking out 140bhp and 148lbs/ft and really flies.

thinking about next project though and think i can now manage a 16v conversion, but what power outputs can i expect?? seen abf's are approx 150 but for the extra 10bhp its not really worth it :?

also read about 6a/9a's getting around 175 but what mods are required apart from the kr inlet cam??

paul what does your 16v kick out now? had a read of your build thread but theres no final figure?

cheers

Chris

Never got it rolling roaded again, because it would cost ?60 + day off work to do it; and the car's running as sweet as it ever was. Can't see the point of taking a fully working car to a garage….

Literally word for word ditto.

Well was, until the Head Gasket went a year ago anyway

140 sounds really good for the 8V mate  8)

well if i'm honest it was 139.5 but 140 sounds better

its got all the 8v mods possible really other than the big valves.

just need another project now, i have a full mk2 valver i can use for bits so was thinking of getting a 16v ready next.

cheers

bear in mind the different power dilivery. you may get 150-160 from a 2.0 16v conversion, but you will not get the torque that you already have. how about a bit of nos?

nos i would probably kill myself mate

so a 6 and two 3's scenario then?? for the higher bhp i'll lose torque, and in the big picture will only be gaining a fraction in overall power??

Guy had 194bhp out of his 16v.  That was essentially a very heavily re-worked KR and was still running K-jet.

Matt also has 190bhp from a valver.  That's out to 1.9 and is breathing through motorbike carbs.

The 16v engine is eminently tunable and very responsive.  If you use a Mk3 GTI 2.0 engine, re-map it and chuck KR cams in (I know on paper they are the same lift and duration, but they are far more aggressive than standard Mk3 16v cams) with a tubular exhaust (which you'll almost certainly have to use on a Mk1 anyway) you'll see 170bhp pretty much straight away.

Oh, and if anyone tells you to use the larger inlet manifold, tell them they are an idiot.  Unless you are going forces induction or rally cams, the smaller diameter inlet manifold flows better.  You don't want your fuel dropping out due to poor air velocity do you now?

if you do decide to change engines, i could be interested in yours when you get round to selling it.

16V all the way me reckons
