What kinf of flyd for my Cabrio powersteering

Actually I am rebuilding a cabrio and had installed a powersteering. My doubt is what fluyd should I put in it, some people tells me that "green one" and other that "red one"

Somebody can help me?

Thanks and sorry for my english!

LHD, regular Mk1 Golf rack? I guess you'd need to look up the specs and get the right one, there's more than just "green" or "red" fluid! Though I suspect Dextron II ATF would be the right one, which is the same as regular auto transmission fluid.

Hi

Thanks for answering!

My Golf is a 1988 cabriolet DX engine LHD

The powersteering is from another mk1 but not sure which one

Where can I check the specs?

My dealer said that the VW original fluid will be the right one, and actually they only have one, that they called "the green one"

Thanks

look at the bottle, it should say what you need.  I'm with Paul on this one, its likely to need Dexron II ATF, which is something you'll find in most autofactors as said its bog standard automatic transmission oil. Oh and its red ;)

The green stuff from VAG is a bit thinner than the red stuff, I have seen cases where a perfectly fine PAS system leaked when green fluid was added, due to the seals not being designed for it.

I looked up the correct spec and its ZVW 239-902 which is not quite the same as Dextron II, but should still be easy enough to find, eg:

paul is that equivilant to the later 'green' fluid?  becasue MK2s definitly used Dexron II ATF back in the day, and it says specifically this on the fluid reservoir.  unless the MK1 system uses a slightly different spec?

or is that the latest spec fluid, as there have been some revisions since dexron II which afaik are backwards compatible

I don't know, I just lifted it from the manual. An internet search of the ZVW code doesn't show too much up. I'd imagine they're mixable and its simply a VW recommendation for reasons other than if it would work or break (ie seals compatability), for example they may recommend a particular fluid for environmental reasons, or because its a convenient longlife item to align it onto the longlife service schedule, or parts/consumables consolidation reasons, etc etc.

ok, its just i worry that its equivilant to the green stuff, which can be a bit thin for the older seals.  if you replace the pipe seals with the new ones (MK3 1H0 part numbers) then its fine to use the green stuff.  I have heard some mk2 pumps can get a bit noisy on the green fluid though…
