what do you guys think of...

changing a 1.6 (pierburg) carb engine to a 1.8 (weber) carb engine? Primarily, I'd like to change my carb for a webber, but if I could find a working 1.8 engine while I was at it that had a weber attached?

Would a mk2 1.8 driver engine be directly swappable with my 1.6?

Any advice muchly appreciated :)

same as mine. 1.6GL EW.  sure a mk2 1.8 GTI engine will go in no probs. Block off the injector holes, bolt up your manifolds, and add a weber 32/34. easy!

I was going to do this sometime soon. Just need a very good bottom end to find, already got a good head.

another way is too just change the pistons/crank and rods. Which will keep the original block and then that would give you a 1.8. Keeping your engine number. homing out the bores add new rings and way your off.

already have weber 32/34 on my EW, which works ten times better than the horrible pierburg..lol…which i would re-jet for the 1.8.

if you can find a decent 1.8 motor, then why not.

Yep and it shouldn't be too difficult or technical either. There's far less connections to worry about, and more space - no oil cooler, smaller radiator, smaller airbox, etc etc.

Awesome, that souds like a plan. At least that way I dont have to worry too much about taking my pierburg to bits  :)

satelliteone: I've got a mk2 gti engine in bits in me garage that I was thinking of refurbing, but tbh I could do with the space at the moment. If you want all the bits to refurb/rebuild the block super-cheap let me know. can email u pics if you like.

hi satelliteone, i'm trying to sort out a 1.8 engine now with weber carb. If/when I sort this out you would be welcome to the 1.8 gti block and bits gratis, all you'd need to pay for would be a courier. I'll be needing the gareg space!
