What are these wires for?

hi all

very new to this forum malarkey so ill just get straight to it.

i currently own a mk1 clipper convertible 1.8 8v with a weber carb (EX engine i think)

at the moment i am in the process of stripping it down for a 1.8t swap
my query is what is each wire that goes into the engine for, so i can label them up prior to taking the engine out.
(i.e which is oil pressure sensor, oil temp sensor etc.)
a diagram would be ridiculously helpful.

when it comes to electrics you could get more knowledge from a dead babies arse. :banghead:

any help would be spot on…

The easiest thing to do is to label the wires as you disconnect them.

thats what i was intending but im just not sure for instance which sensor the one on the gearbox side of the head is or what the 3 plugs at the front are for.

i think it would be easier if i took a photo of each plug and then maybe people on here could tell me what it is. ive looked for hours for an engine wiring diagram for my car but theres nowt out there

Where did you look? There are wiring diagrams in the Haynes manual.

hmm ill have to have another look tomorrow with a fresh head the only ones ive hound are for gti engines (DX) whereas mine is carbed. also whoever owned the car before my bodged the wiring so i think it would be better if i worked my way backwards from the engine.

btw i followed your build v.closely epic stuff

if you're doing a 1.8t swap then you wont e using most of the wires in the engine loom anyway, you will keep your wiper and oil/water sensor wires thats about it.

once the loom is out strip it down completly then use the wiring diagrams in the haynes and the fusebox faq to go thru all your fusebox pins till you have identified the ones you need. worst case take a pic of what you arnt sure of and we can id them for you :)

hi me again ive narrowed it down now to the 3 plugs on the coolant outlet on the front of the cylinder head.
i know 1 is thermo time switch, another is coolant temp sensor. just not sure which is the last one and which plug is which as the colours of my wires dont match the service manual.

there shouldnt be 3 plugs!

like i said, ignore what you have in the bay. use the diagrams and the fusebox sticky to identify the pins on your fusebox plug, then work back from that! pretty much all the engien bay stuff on the engine loom isnt even needed when you go 1.8t swap

your best bet is you work out what ecu your going to use then have a loom made job done

duh its a carby! there are 2 thermoswitches on the front flange, one for carb autochoke and one for inlet heater. webber doesnt have an autochoke though so thats why you have a spare.

but either way, forget the engien side start at the fusebox side

well i steamed on ahead today nearly ready to drop engine out. just need to drain brake system and remove servo etc.

now thanks to rubjonny its all labelled up to (just in case, im a dunce when it comes to electrics.)
i was also hoping rubjonny would be able to knock up a loom for either an emerald or megasquirt ecu.(which is best?) what i need to send to you? im guessing my loom from fusebox onwards,mk 4 loom from ecu to engine and relevant ecu loom (do you need lighting loom?)

cheers for your help im glad i signed up.

you will only need the engine harness and ecu then theres a bout 10 wires to splice into the existing fusebox most ecu's come with a pig tail loom and wiring diagram

just buy my whole car job done 20vt conversion complete lol

ha yeah could do that, i was very tempted last week but ive put too much into this cabby to abandon it now.
and plus i think it would be good experience to do it myself. however…. if your willing to break it then youve got a buyer for the engine and box.

lol no worrys you could have both cars side by side and swap all the bits across and end up with 2 running cars for alot less than it may cost you

i can do either of those looms for you, but personally id choose oem much cheaper and easier as no need to buy ecu or have it mapped.just need immob defeated and some things coded out if you arnt using them.

mk4 based looms are £100, but i have 14 to do so dont expect it to be done before feb! or just buy a ready made one, saves lots of hassle ;)

that sounds better and i suppose there would be more places that could remap the ecu to bigger power.
where can i get ready made looms from or is it just a case of trying my luck on fleabay?
bit off topic here but as my cabby is an 89 carb model do i need to change fuel pump, fuel lifter etc, the fuel lines are already on the drivers side.

you can either make yourself using guidance from the forums, on cgti in particular is a very good thread on it ivce put in a bit of mk1 specific info. or i can make you one but again you'll have to wait, or buy one ready done.

for the fuellign you'll need a mk1 gti fuel pump, fuel lines you can make up with fuel injection hose as its not going to be under as much pressure as it would if you went k-jet. you dont need the fuel accumulator but you will need a luift pump and under-car reservoir from a late spec cabby/scirocco injection or g40 shape polo. you might find mk2/3 or polo plastic fuel lines fit nicely too :)

hi again regarding fuelling parts
would these be ok?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MK1-GOLF-GTI-PASSAT-SCIROCCO-GTX-FUEL-INJECTION-PUMP-/150710414846?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item23170a6dfe#ht_3174wt_952

with regards to the accumulator and under car reservior dont they do the same thing?why dont i need the accumulator? wheres the best place to get a reservoir from (scrappy?) and finally i thought k-jet were the best pumps for this kind of thing.

cheers for your help so far im finally getting to grips with 90% of this conversion now.

1st one yep that under car pump will do you, 2nd one is no good as its mk2 in-tank and wont fit mk1 tank. needs to be later mk1 cab/rocco or g40 shape polo lifter pump/sender assembly (get the whole thing! the pump on its own is no good to you either)

for the main pump buy something like this:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12MM-BANJO-8MM-HOSE-M12x1-5-BOLT-FUEL-OIL-/390330527114

then you can use normal push fit fuel injection hose
