wats better

hi there

i wanted to make my mk1 clipper quicker but i was wondering what would be the best thing to do its a 1.8 carb and wanted to know wat is involed in the 2.0 16v conversion or the 2.0 8v as i have heard that the 2.0 8v has more tourque i am a mechanic and i know stuff like changing the fuel pump and lines and so on and on but i have been told that it will go straight in but i have to change the gear box mount is this true if so does someone do a conversion kit and also how straight forward is the wirering to do

or would i be better off staying with my engine and putting twin 40s on with a top end rebuild

thanx terry

If yours is a 1.8 Carb (Clipper?) then your engine mounts will be fine for either the 8V or 16v, both will drop straight in.

2.0 16V has more torque than 2.0 8V

the old 8v/16v. ultimately depends on cash to required power ratio. there is the option of a 2.0 8v and still run a carb/carbs.

what it is i have been offered a very cheap mk3 gti 2.0 8v and i am going to take it as i know the history of it and know its a good car there was other things i wanted off it ie brakes and that and i thought while i was there i would use the engine just to give mine a bit of a better power

would this be a good idea or do i not bother and stay with mine

by the way before the engine goes in i will be rebuilding it with lots of goodies as well
