vw engine rebuild

Hi, I am a new boy to this forum and would like some advice regarding the engine & gearbox rebuild of my mk1 cab 1800 gti 1989.  I would be looking to make the engine more efficient and am thinking of the normal lighten/balance/ gas flow mods but I wonder if anyone has done such engine work to their golf and would be able to give me the benefit of their wisdom! perhaps you feel I am wasting my money and should just by a recon or replace with a later engine.  

Has anyone any ideas re the fuel injection system [K-Jetronic] or are there any mods I could make, could I have the engine remapped?

Any ideas would be gratefully received.

The most popular conversion seems to be 16V or 20VT . If you have a read through the Mod section on here or on Club GTI site .
