a grinder, decent welder, LOTS of patients and common sense! i chose to keep the original chassis legs etc and make my own mounts etc. its alot of work. im going to be running mine on 16v 100mm drive shfts for the time being (mainly as thats what i had in there from the previous engine conversion!) have a look on the vw caddy forum, their's a guy on there who has used the mk3 subframe…which i would do next time round!!!! The exhaust manifold needs to be altered as it'll hit the baulkhead. there is a guy on another forum who done this by cutting the vr manifold just below the flexi joints, flipped over the botton section, welded it back together, then welded on a mk1 coupling plate. i'll see if i can find the link. I shall be getting a custom system made for mine.
Then there's the wiring….lots of splicing, soldering and pain in the ass stuff, inc speedo pick up…original mk1 has mechanical pick up, vr has elec pick up! the vr clutch is a hydro item, but you can get the conversion kit to make it cable, and use a mk2 golf 1.3 driver cable(i think)
also you have brakes to think about, if you still have drums on the back, best to make them disc's, and put bigger disc's on the front. loads more stuff, its a challenge, but will be worth it in the long run…but you'll know you made a good choice! :D i know i have! :D  :D
