vin plate

I brought a mk1 golf shell of ebay 3/4 months ago people may remember it was a orange mk1 shell set up for rallying.
when i brought the car the bloke said it was suitable for road use as well.He had stripped of a lot of stuff from the engine bay due to weight, but starting work transfering my parts over i noticed he had removed the panel where the vin plate was.i have all the documents etc for the car and have had it registered with new engine number. What is the procedure i need to get it replaced i have friends telling me that i can't but i have read you can. if anyone can help or tell me what to do i would be very grateful
cheers alex

Local vw dealer parts dept. will give you a vin request form which will require you to fill in your details + car and reason for request then you will need to get it inspected by police (arranged at local station) once they are happy all is above board they fax confirmation to vw customer services you then take form back to deal who faxes the approved request to Germany for a new Vin plate to be issued.

Do you mean the area where the scuttle is that has the chassis number stamped in?
the vin plate is the little black oblong on the front slam panel on the left of the bonnet catch, should have 2 rivets in it,

If he has removed the scuttle piece then you could get a garage to re stamp the chassis number into the left hand (as you look in the bay) suspension turret, (it always was put here on the early cars anyway)

if it is the vin plate itself missing i think you can get a replacement from vw, i dont think its cheap though!!
