twin 40s onto mk1 driver

what is needed for this and what sort of gains would i expect?

how much will it cost? is it more reliable than usual carb?

and how often do they need adjusting?

plus will my standard G40 cam fit and will it make any gains etc.

what engine is in the mk1 driver?

i wouldn't advise using the standard g40 cam. forcely induced lumps tend to run milder cams than thier normally perspirated vehicles :|

think twin 40s have been done before i meant, sorry.

whats needed for this, manifold, twin 40 carbs, or could i use bike carbs, how easy would the fuelling be to adjust.

if i do keep the mk1 i would want to make it a bit more powerful and a bit more reliable as it will be used everyday if i keep it

i would suggest that buying a tgti is your best all round option. failing that, as said, a 1.8/2.0 carbed engine. use the twin40's on that.?

twin 40's on a 1.3 golf has been done before many times, not sure where u'd get a manifold from tho, germany? Would be interesting to see wot sort of power it would make with a few mods  :) . There was a white 1300 mk2 in PVW once that rev'd to 10'000rpm  8O

im not to bothered about mpg really

if i do keep the mk1 i was looking at options to do to the original engine to make it more reliable but give it a bit more uumph!

so an engine conversion is out of the question for now unless its a straight swap job on same mounts, wiring etc. was thinking of polo gt engine maybe, could i use the 4 speed box on this or would it have to be the 5 speed one

A mate has 45's , with small chokes  , on his standard Scirocco 1.8 (non Gti) . properly set up on a rolling road , he gained about IIRC 20 bhp , and finds very little difference in economy, under normal driving .

Twin carbs + manifolds would work out quite pricey, I suspect. The manifolds would be quite rare, so there's realistically no chance of finding a secondhand set - you'd have to buy new and import them. And the carbs are not cheap either. I remember someone buying new, and it was around ?1000 or so for all the bits.

I am guessing, you are looking for inexpensive tuning options?

What car's it going into, and does it already have any braking and suspension mods?

I'm not sure on this one, but I think the 1.1, 1.3, 1.5 and 1.6 carb models all had the same brakes and similar suspension, so you'd be okay here but to go any higher than 75bhp (the 1.6 carb) you'd need to consider an upgrade to GTI items.

You can forget about fuel injection, there's so much to modify on the fuel system you'd soon have used all your money up.

Best bet would probably be 1.8 carb engine from a later Clipper, or something like that. You could chisel off your existing engine mount (carefully), do all the prep work and get a garage to weld it into the right position for a big block, for not-too-much. Then you'd simply need to purchase:

1.8 carb engine and box, and all its gear linkage I think?
1.6 manifold and exhaust system for hatchback
possibly a few other bits and bobs

There's plenty of info around, concerning swapping small block to big block engine.

Was flicking though this months pvw and theres a yellow mk1 polo 1272 running twin 2 stroke 500cc bike carbs (keihin 41mm flat-slide carbs) . The info on what they are and where they came from is vague mainly the above. They're said to produce a extra 16 bhp over the twin 45's that were on there beforehand. The manifold was a custom effort by sorg.

Amazingly they managed to push 1272cc to produce 170 bhp with a few other odds n sodds. Which gives me some hope lol
