twin 40s on a 1.8gti
hi, i have just brought a set of twin 40s, but the manifold points towards the bulkhead, is there a swan manifold that i could use instead because i want them to point outwards and i want ot be able to see them.
also is there anyway of blocking up my injector ports without making the head only being able to run carbs?

Hmm cant see why youd want to junk a superior fuel injection system for carbs but……each to his own i say!
You can block the injector ports with a self made blanking plug an O ring and the original injector inserts that screw in to trap the blank behind it.
I actually used 4 1 penny pieces as a test on a 1.8 running carbs a few years back and it worked fine.
The guys at the head reconditioners laughed their heads of when they saw it though.

Don't think you can get them… Would be a custom made affair I think.
Do you mean that you want the manifold to loop back over the top of the rocker so that the carbs are pointing forwards?

ye i want the carbs to sit just above the rocker facing the front of the car, any ideas where i would get a manifold from?

twin 40s on a 1.8gti
Change the head for a seat one or a newer vw item were the inlet ports come out the front like the 16v it is a better cuz it is cross flow and it will drag cold air in from the front unlike the head u have that drags loads of hot air in from the exhaust manifold i have had this before and u don't gain much from 40's that is y i have gone 16v with twin 45's and kr cams don't know what engine code they are from but keep looking as i have seen them on ebay.

You may have bonnet clearance issues…
Never ever seen a manifold like this. I think it would have to be custom made and probably not worth the effort or expense…

Another thought to consider is the throttle hesitation of such a long manifold with such large bends in it. A friend of mine has an old subaru running 45mm sidedrafts. There were quite a few changes in the way the manifolds had to be reworked to get it to run right. If you do try to fab something up (which would look awsome) try to keep the runner's individual as the sidedrafts don't like to be hooked into the same box. As each barrel has fuel stacks. This is a neat trick to show your friends after it is hooked up and running. Get a timeing light and shine it on the velocity stacks. You can actually see the fuel stack up out of the top of the carbs. Good luck.

If you are running side drafts on an 8v GTI they are always going to be pointing towards the bulkhead.
16v items sit on the front of the engine because the head is a different design.
I guess if you fitted an American Market cross flow head but then you'd have to do work on the block too.
You could get a pair of down draft carbs like Dellorto DRLA's but then you are looking at a custom manifold fabrication.
If you wanted you could get really long ram pipes that bend up and over the rocker cover. Remember - the longer the ram pipes, the better but also bear in mind you want cool air getting inducted.
Gearbox oil fill plugs are ideal for blocking up the injector ports.
I've personally had better performance from twin 40's than K-jet fueling but they have to be setup properly.
