Thoughts on a 20v turbo conversion

Ok peeps, just putting out some feelers at the moment. Got a project to start and want to go down the turbo charged route. Have found a decent garage who has done some good work on our 1.5 auto and the 16v. He says he can do the job no prob, but would like advice from you guys cause were all in the same boat here . Basically i need an expert out there to guide me in the process of firstly getting the right bits please.  :D  Have been advised to get the 225 bhp unit and sure he mentioned a corrado box but dont quote me on it. he has quoted me 10 - 12 hours labour for the job all in. Before i get too heavily comitted to the job with him i would welcome any input to whatever problems/pitfalls out there on this conversion. Also apart from help aquiring the correct parts for the job, ballpark figures from anyone whose done this before would be great. Am thinking of getting all required bits over the  next 2 months and then letting him do this. Thoughts please guys, thank you  :D

10-12hrs labour!!! He has no idea of the work involved in doing this conversion, I reckon at an absolute minimum 40hrs if you've done a few and have exactly the right bits waiting and ready to go on and even then I think that'd be pushing it.
I have over 80hrs in my wiring loom alone, it is about as custom as you'll get though, full custom mk4 golf loom fitted to the mk1, if it wasn't needed then it's been removed.  Would've been much easier to use aftermarket ecu and splice into mk1 loom, but my mk4 loom works a sight better than a mk1 loom.

I think the 225bhp is an AUQ from an Audi TT (nice if you want that much power!!!) but from what ive been reading you'll need a dif for the gearbox which is a few hundred £££'s extra

Myself and my club members have done this it took us 10 trips to the Barn ( where we did it ) in total probably 80 hours all in it helped we had 3 people there who had done it before but none had done a 20vt MK1 all were MK2 boys. Also helped one chap for a living makes wiring looms for Touring cars etc etc, and also helped we had a electronic automotive chap.

I went for a AGU and with the Qpeng its putting out 200bhp and is really really good fun to drive, as for a shopping list try here………

Good luck

Oh and money its rally hard to say as it all depends on the quality of the parts you put on, for instance i spent £700 on suspension i could have saved money for going for cheaper.

there are a couple of 225bhp units the BAM is one.  the AUQ is a 180bhp. People have different ideas as to what engine is best, and have various reasons for thinking so.  I'm using an AUQ because it's what i had/found.  You will pay more money for a BAM and i don't think the benefits are there especially for the price increase.  It is more  work than you mechanic thinks though.  there is very very little chance of doing this conversion in 12h, but i'm no expert.

Thoughts on a 20v turbo conversion

Its only a tentative time quote from my man, am gonna go for the BAM 225 bhp unit, starting to collect the the parts now to do it in the winter time as we're getting married in November. Will do a thread then to put times to the job. I just want to give him every part needed and say go for it . There's a fairly comprehensive list in this months performance VW which is dedicated to to the MK1. Anyone improve on the bits recommended in this mag if you've seen it ????  :)

I was told the AGU golf engine uses the same bottom end and large port head as the BAM, you can then get 200 from a K03 or 230 from a K03s or you could get the K04, injectors and a 4bar FPR and get 260.

AGU's are more redily available aswell.
