Tachometer Golf MK3->MK1

Hi all, I am new to club :), I bought Golf MK1 just for tuning purpose, and got one quick question if someone can answer me, I live in Bosnia, so I did not know where to post this, hope its right place and sorry for low English :) I got from golf mk3 gauge and I wanna put it in MK1 is that possible, becouse of RPM's… and that stuff, and if it is possible how to do it?? I got loads of parts from mk3 so if something is missing maybe replace it or add it just explain if you had time for it :)) gauge looks like this https://www2.corecommerce.com/~partplazaaut288/images/products/352.JPG  Best Regards :))

Welcome to the forum.

Anything is possible, though I doubt it will be easy to get that to work in the Mk1…

You'd need a custom module to convert the rotational speedo into an electrical pulse of the right frequency; and convert the rev counter from coil negative trigger to whatever the Mk3 Golf engine's ECU output (there's slightly different electrical arrangements, and probably 5V instead of 12V). Since these types of conversions are really only done on 'specials' and custom engine installs, etc, there's a very low demand for them and subsequently a high cost. The actual electronics involved isn't too onerous, though. Possibly you might be able to make something for a speedo using a hall sender and trigger wheel off a different part, eg the CVJ bolts and a bracket next to the gearbox/engine.

its way easier than that paul :)

MK3 has a speedo sensor which will drop right into a mk1 box, just a case of getting the right one. if 020 box in the mk1 then you need 1.8-2.0 8v mk3, if 02a then you need 16v/vr6 mk3, if 1.0-1.3 then you need a 1.4 mk3. then wire up the sensor, brown is earth, black is live, blue/white is speedo signal to the dash.

for the rev counter you need electronic ignition, so if its a later model you're all set. if not get the bits you need from a mk2 golf to convert it! then run the mk3 revo signal to the TCI unit pin 7 job done :)

im just a hopeless geek, i cant help it! :lol:

although… what i forgot is the final drive. mk3 sensors are all red gear type, so if box needs a white or green it will be out. you might be able to swap the gear over though but ive not tried that.
