Suitable engine swap + insurance question?

Hello!

I'm looking at buying a mk1 hardtop, but having a real struggle trying to find a non gti version (for insurance reasons, i'm 18 and about to sit my test).

Would it be worth my while buying a mk1 gti and then buying a 1.4 engine and getting that fitted in there? Also, would that lower my insurance?

If so, which engines are suitable? Thinking about a polo engine or something… not really fussy for something really fast as I'm just after the mk1 look 8)

Cheers!

I don't think that would be worthwile as the base car is still a GTI and would still hurt you on insurance. Keep looking there have been some really nice 1.1 and 1.3's around get one spend a couple of years minting up the bodywork and getting it looking the way you want then when you have some no claims you can move an engine mount and fit pretty much whatever lump your budget will allow.

Good luck whichever route you take.

if you bought a gti and then did a 1.1 engine conversion, you will probably pay moreinsurance than if you kept it a gti.

Go for a mk1 Driver, 1.3 engine with gti looks, you could change the interior for a gti and fool everyone…..

There are some smart Drivers for sale just take your time finding one.
