Steering rack gaiters & exhaust heat???

Just finishing putting my engine back in put a 2.0 bottom end on using a 4 branch, offered it up yesterday seems really close to the steering rack gaitor, bit worried about it catching fire with the heat ? My 4 branch is wrapped but is there any thing else I could do? Got some old heat shield from under a Corrado the tinfoil like stuff , is it worth wrapping the gaitor?

I think its not only the gaitor, dont really want the steering joints getting too hot and drying out so any extra heat protection can only be a good thing.

Someone on here recently had the same problem and set their car ablaze.....

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

It works fine now, the engines coming back out over winter and only alteration I'm doing to the plate is to take the back part of the exhaust clamp out so it sits closer to manifold.

I know there are people that run without anything but heatwrap though and they're fine. Easiest way is cut the thing off but mot failure.

Alternatively to a big plate etc, get an aerosol can, pierce it to relieve pressure and cut top/bottom off and slice down middle, wrap that around the boot. That was an idea of somebody on club Gti, don't know how it held up but its an option.

You being a lagger could make small blankets that fit around the boot itself and sell em tbh mate. Lots of people should buy them!

I've though about making removable jackets before but I'm afraid that's as far as it got lol

Suppose I should get my finger out and have a go..

Right I've started the ball rolling on these jackets..
We use a company in Wales because they can make them cheaper than we can buy the materials.
I obviously need dimensions ie length / circumference but what would everyone prefer to insulate, the exhaust or the rubber boots?
These jackets will be removable with Velcro fastenings and tie cords at each end but are all fire rated

Your thoughts please

hi all….
easy option for you all is fire blanket… these are fairly cheap
cut to shape / fit and wrap around steering boot, plus heat wrap manifold of course…
this is my plan for when i fit my abf into my car…
cheers

As above, if lagger gets the blankets for a fair price (enough to wanna save your mk1) then it would be beat for the blanket to go around the boot itself then hear wrap the manifold aswell :)
