starting problem mk1 16v

hi there can anyone help me ive just put a mk2 16v golf engine in my mk1 and ive got a problem i had it started up the other day but it didnt run for long come to start it today and as i was turning it over the engine was stopping like the timing was too far retarded then she started up and ran real lumpy for about a minute (had 2 keep revs on) then cut out now apart from a cough and splutter she wont go i dont no wot to do with it as im no expert and where i live there is no veedub specialists, has any one had a problem like this before im pulling my hair out now cos i just want to be out in it, any help would be great cheers

cam belt jumped a tooth??

Have you checked the basics? Can it be made to run at all, at the moment? And what have you done in between it running (albeit poorly) and now not running?

The frustrating thing about these types of threads, is someone will suggest something (which later turns out to be the cause) but it won't get checked properly, also it could be loads of different things when you do an engine conversion, ranging from the "bleeding obvious" to the rare freak occurrences or even stuff like important components missing or vital connections, simply not connected!

So best to start with the basics and let us know what you've checked already, might be able to steer you in the right direction here!

hi ive checked spark, checked fuel both ok havent checked timing yet doing that tomorrow, tied down a few loose earth straps, the only thing i havent done is wire up the ecu part that comes with the other engine do i have to even though mine was a gti originally?? wot else should i check
