standard 1.8 block

Hello all
I am told that a ol standard 1.8 block will swap straight into my mk1 1.5 gl,
i am drawn towards doing this conversion because i am told i can use the existing fuel tank and fuel lines et.c. basicalyy without changing much. I plan to get a gti lowering kit installed soon and upgrade brakes stiffen the chasis e.t.c. jus wanted some pointers or tips about putting a 1.8 block in,  and what would be really helpful if anyone has a standard 1.8 block for sale or knows places where i could possibly find such an engine i basically want to try and steer away from the world of ecu`s

If you find a 1.8 carb block (eg EX engine code from a cabby clipper) it will go straight in, with only the top radiator hose requiring swapping too. The 1.8 is high compression, compared to the 1.6 (or 1.5) so you'll see a benefit there, as well as the extra capacity. Another intermediate step is to use a 1.8 GTI engine (eg, DX engine code), you can block up the injector ports with 1p pieces and fit your (carb) inlet manifold onto it. The GTI head has a more agressive cam and larger valves than the carb engine.

You could even use a 3A block with DX head, to achieve 2.0l and adapt your existing carb onto it.

With any increase, you'll need your carburettor re-jetted to suit.

1p pieces is a good way but 12mm allen key's cut down and silicolned in place is a good way as well.
