The Magnex centre section never quite fitted properly, hence it was replaced with the custom pipe - anywhere like Longlife/Powerflow will be able to do this for you for not much money.
On my other Mk1 I've got a custom made Powerflow system and it's spot on, never had any problems. However, it's been on the car a while and I have heard that the quality of the systems may have gone down hill since then - all I can say is mine is very good.
If you can find a Magnex back box, buy it - they are good!

my GTI came with a Supersprint which IMO stuck out like a sore thumb, I thought it was horrible.. so i've got a standard system back on it now.
I really rate Magnex systems as I had one on my Mk2 16v and it was quality!
I'm not really well up on S/S systems for the Mk1.. I have a few friends who swear by Powerflow systems as they are tailored to your exact specification so you can have a nice standard looking back box, or slash cut or whatever you like..
there's loads out there so make sure you're happy with what you hand over your dosh for!

Supersprint do do stainless and are apparently the best fitting exhaust you can buy for a Mk1.
