Speedometer reading??

Hi

I want my first mod to be a new dash (Audi TT) with the clocks ie, speedo/rev counter.
Once intalled i will be driving with it in before i can afford my new engine (Also Audi TT 1.8turbo) how will i know that im getting the correct speedometer reading as im not quite sure how the reading is taken.
Does it connect to the engine or the wheels?
If its the engine how would i go about connecting it to a GTi 1800 lump?
If its the wheels will i need to fit the same size wheels? (i plan the TT wheels anyway after some rolling)

I know these questions may seem dumb but the wiring part of all this is what im trying to learn as i cant afford to do this twice.

Any help or advise would be much appreciated.

Hi Mike the original dash will have a cable from your dash to the gearbox. The TT dash will probably be a sensor in the gearbox that sends the info to the dash via wires so you would need a sensor the wiring and a wiring diagram for the TT to figure it out. Cheers Baz

A haynes manual for a TT. If you knew someone in an audi garage they could photocopy. I would search google or someone on hear may have source. Goodluck Baz
