RWD longtitudinal engine mounting... calling the Guru's!

Hi guys,

Could do with some help/reassurance/ideas. I'm desperate for the space, and on the verge of cutting her up (sob)…

Quick backstory : Had the Mk1 for about 5 years, in my garage, stripped down, I return to it occasionally to do a bit more work. It's just a bare shell on axle-stands right now. I've got full Mk2 Syncro panels and running gear, and full sierra cosworth running gear (aside from engine/box). Intention was and is, to Cosworth it. (probably RWD) But there's a problem.

Current progress :
Boot floor cut and altered to accept rear diff mountings.
Rear beam mount areas altered to accept Cosworth rear beam/arms.
Cage.

Problem :
It's the engine and the inner wings. I've looked at it a million ways, and no matter how I do, the inner wings aren't going to sit well with the Cosworth engine, they're just too high, as the Cosworth block mounts up with it's own little subframe that runs transverse across the front.

My solution (which is a problem) was to buy an XR4x4, cut off the front end, and re-work the complete inner wings to mate up to the bulkhead,  but I've not got room anymore :-(

Any ideas on solutions to this greatly appreciated… all the ideas I come up with for little custom subframes I could knock up, I'm nervous won't support the weight properly.

*phew* … long for a first post! Any opinions/ideas greatly received, I'm at last chance saloon. I've made the the decision, either I crack on, or it goes.

Cheers!
Steve

hmm

there was a cabrio a few years back running a cossie lump rwd the inner wings were replaced with part of the roll cage so basicaly they space framed the front of the car to get the engine to fit

anyway a cossie in a mk1 is no different to a big power 20vt apart from its rwd

if i was you id probaly use synchro running gear and just get a 20vt lump or r32 lump with twin chargers

or as the guy on ed38 say im going to feed the twins

The easiest and most popular way to do the Cossie 4wd is to cut the cossie floorpan down to suit the Golf shell. I've seen 205's, 206, Manta's, Mk3/4/5 Escorts all done this way. The one problem you will have is the width of the chassis relative to the Sierra. It's a big job to narrow everything down.

Cheers guys!

Right, been on QPE, I'll be mailing Ben shortly! Also signed up for ED38, trawling the archives, but if you could find his name, that'd be fantastic :D

Funny you should mention that Cabio, couple of years ago I moved heaven and earth to get a copy of the original magazine, and the buggers never quite showed how it was done! Wish it was a bit easier… think space-framing to that level's where IO draw the line ;-)

I was hoping to make a box-section mini-cradle to sit underneath the 'trunk' section on the inner wings, which would bring the mounting level down to an acceptable level for the cossie cradle, but with that amount of power, I'm just scared it'll start twisting :/

Keep 'em coming! :D
