Reverse swing brake pedal

While browsing the internet (at work  ) I came across these and it got me thinking.

Could you squeeze these under the dash on the drivers side, and make the cylinders and pipework clear the steering column / electrics / etc…?

This would remove the need for the levers to the original master cylinder, and in addition would allow you to set up the brake balance as you wanted. This may result in superior braking (if set up correctly of course).

Has anyone tried this before? Any thoughts or advice would be very welcome.

Thanks in advance

Rich

It's a bias pedal box. Been around for donkeys years in all forms of racing.

Thanks for the reply - at least it's tried and tested in general.

But do you reckon will it fit? Or has anyone tried using these on a Mk1?

Shop around!

Some of the kits will cost you an arm and a leg though some are quite reasonable.
Bear in mind though - If this is for a daily driver, it may be more hard work to drive as you lose the assistance of the brake servo…

go to shows and you'll see quite a few of the top spec mk1s and 2s running stuff like that  :y:

The balance bar costs under ?40, the cylinders around ?25 each. If you can weld and fabricate, you're away.

Cool - thanks for the advice guys.

I found Tilton Engineering do a set, but they're about ?600+ just for the pedal assembly 8O. Way out of my price range, although they do look very nice.

I like the idea of fabricating one myself though - this is definitely the cheapest route. al - I may even see if I can squeeze the servo in there too to make general driving a bit easier.

It's all hypothetical at this stage anyway - I still need somewhere to work on the car! (Work in progress there at the mo…)

Cheers

Not impossible…

I'm sure I have seen Mk1's in the past with the servo mounted on the drivers side meaning you could bolt it direct to your pedal set-up. Don't think it will fit with the 8V set up though - Manifold gets in the way.
16v on carbs maybe?!?

I was thinking about a new head (again all very hypothetical) - did VW make a crossflow 8v head for a 1.6?

A 16v head on a 1.6 is too revvy and not torquey enough at the bottom end IMO (carbs could see to that) but I think I'd like to keep it as stock as possible.
