Rear Discs......

Hi everyone,

Im in the process of putting the big disc convertion on the fronts, the one with the vauxhall calipers and uprated m/c +servo… which got me thinking of the rears…

Where do you take the rear axle with disc brakes form??

Can you use a mk2 gti??

You don't need the whole rear axle, just the stub axles I think…(?)  You can use mk2, 3 or 4 rears!  Think same passats etc as well.  Mk4 golf rears are ally ;)

I still haven't got round to fitting the Vauxhalls!  will be doing it week after next, have booked week off work to play with the car  :D

yea and get the scirocco 16valver handbrake cables as they are longer as your old ones wont fit!
you may need to extend the copper pipe too

i always have the last laugh ;)

Really, really think hard and long about a rear disk conversion.

IMO the Mk1 sheel is far too light for rear disks and unless you are racing the car (and brake fade might be a problem) I would not do it.  Even if you do you'll need to heavily bias the front.

Otherwise you be locking up the rears and spinning before you know it!

I won't deny mine is a bit back heavy on the brakes…

The Fronts??
They are 256mm.

I had a look at the FAQ on brakes, they dont really recomend doing the rear brake convertion, just bleeding new brake fliud through and adjusting them correctly…

Think i will stick with the rear drums, sounds easier too….

Cheers…

Good idea sticking to drums, my rears lock up all the time with just standard brakes.

completely renew your rear brake set up - new shoes, drums, blast and paint the back plates, new cylinders, new braided flexi's, new hard lines and new fluid

more than likely your current set up is a good few years old - it will make a big difference.

Yes mate, sounds like a plan….

it will be easier, and by the sounds of it a better set up all round, need to get the discs up front on first.

I was reading through the FAQ for braking regards to the fronts, and someone said by fitting the m/c and servo from a passat/carrado you lose the brake light switch??

How do you over come this problem as i dont fancy driving around with no brake lights….

Cheers…

The t-piece is just a splitter, not a pressure switch itself, you need the t-pieces to plumb in the pressure switchs (or split the lines for the corners).

The mk1 m/cyls have 6 outlets, one for each corner and two pressure switchs (well mine did, lol).    The 16V m/cyls come as either 3 or 4 port (The passat one I had had 3, the golf GS&F one I bought had 4)

Or as Carbs4ever said, pull the pressure switch wires back into the car and plug in a pedal switch.
