Rear brake conversion to discs, from where and how much??

Hi all,
Lookin for some advice on brakes;

Want to do rear conversion and upgrade all round. Where's best to look for a full rear conversion kit (brand new) and anyone got some opinions on best brand to look at for new front calipers, discs and pads?
Also can you give me a rough idea on complete cost back and front (not fitted)
All help appreciated, thanks.

REAR DISCS

Buying the components brand new is possible but would naturally cost more than secondhand. You'd need:

Stub axles
Discs
Pads
Calipers
Handbrake cables (from 16V Scirocco)
Rear wheel bearing kit
4x bolts each side to bolt stub axles to rear beam
new rearmost solid brake lines, a little longer
flexi brake lines (to caliper)

There's a choice of caliper you can use; Mk2, Mk3 or Mk4 which get progressively more expensive but are progressively better, the Mk2 ones tend to seize and the Mk4 ones are alloy I think. Also there's an additional modification to make the Mk4 ones work with the handbrake but I don't know the details of it.

Costs? To pick up all the bits secondhand, ?40-60 but some of the components (pads, discs) might be worn out and need replacement. New, the whole lot is probably getting on for ?200-250.

Unlike the fronts, its not really an area which needs a lot of braking performance (the harder the braking required, the more weight transfer occurs to the front, so you don't need more and more braking at the rear) and for this reason stock components and stock pads often prove best. Just steer clear of ultra-cheap low quality pattern parts and you should be okay. Its also why many suggest that rear discs aren't really required, even on a powerful modified Mk1, although there's other advantages such as better self adjusting, etc.

FRONTS

There's plenty of different options here, and info in the FAQ (I think?), it would depend what kind of performance level you're after for the whole car as to which is best. Also, the larger the brakes the more restrictions on the wheels that fit over them. eg 256mm discs –> 14" wheels, 280mm discs –> only certain 15" wheels.

great info from Paul as always.

I'll chime in and say it's one of the best mods I've done to my car.

I swapped over a 22mm master with cabby proportioning valves as well.

LOVE it.  I would have to say the brakes feel better then any of my other VWs  even the MK5gti
