Putting mk2 rear bench cloth onto mk1 bench

I recently heard in another thread that the cloth from a mk2 rear bench can quite easily be put onto a mk1 bench, and fits well. Can anyone let tell me the best way to do this myself, any tricks and tips to make a decent job of it? It doesn't have to be perfect, but I don't want to spoil a good mk2 bench if I realise half way through that I can't manage it! Thanks for any advice.

I've given this a go, and it was actually very easy and self-explanitory! The mk2 cloth was nice and easy to remove…it just folds round with reinforced edges so nothing has to be cut - which I didn't realise.    The side hinge bolts can be removed to take off the top and bottom cloth, rather than cutting it free aswell. Putting it on the mk1 bench was a bit of a pain though. I used the mk1 foam for the backrest and mk2 foam for the bottom, 'cos the mk1 foam didn't look right in places for the larger cover. Overall it doesn't look bad…not show class, but at least the cloth matches the front seats now, and the rear bench is fully secure with the mk1 base!
I'm glad I saw this tip for swapping the cloth over, it certainly makes a lot more sense than trying to fit the mk2 bench into the car! I'd recommend it…just leave yourself a fair bit of time, refitting it onto the mk1 frame requires a bit of patience!

Good work! Glad to hear someone else has done it. I might do what you've done and squeeeeeze the mk2 foam in top AND bottom…mine does look a bit 'gappy' where the backrest meets the bench. I'll check out your pics when you put 'em up.
