put decent speakers in existing fittings ? - advice sought

greetings again its the Lord of all Stupid Questions…

 any tips for make/model of speaker that will take a bit more of  a hammering without buzzing and distorting than those fitted as standard to an '88 Clipper?( i am not talking huge ragga sub-bass at 6000db, only a bit of death-metal/prog rock using the standard fitted (?) Sony XR 5890r
 the catch is i dont want to start carving holes in the shelf,door trim etc,something that will screw straight into existing door fittings would be grand….

 any ideas? (dont say "change music taste" ha ha)

6x4 will fit straight in to MK1 door pockets and parcel shelf supports. Can get good ones from JBL or Infinity. I think the JBL ones are about ?28. There was a recent post/link from someone about this? Worth doing a search!

I run Infinity ones in mine - they fit straight into the standard holes.  I can't tell you how much they were though as they were in the car when I bought it.

I got my Infinity's front and rear from Southside Audio in Southampton. They advertise (ed) in The Golf for quite a while and the speakers give good sound.

i shoudl be getting some blauphanket (think thats how its spelt??) out into my 89 clipper apparntly they r an eaxct fit…  that 4 the front speakers..

Only thing is it's probably the door fixings and mountings causing most of the buzzing.

Changed my OE 20yr old pioneers for jbls and guess what, they sound the same.

Can't get decent sound from a speaker without a decent mounting, something they didn't quite grasp when they designed the mk1 door pods.

As long as your speakers are intact, i'e no rips or tears in the cones, locate buzzing,maybe a loose screw or something, fix it, leave old speakers and spend money on something else that'll actually make a difference.

As if a speaker is gonna make Death Metal any clearer? Reminds me of an old Napalm Death anecdote, my friend supported them in the early days and said when they were "warming up" it didn't matter what cords the bassist played as he had so much distortion the same noise came out.

Dredge this up 1.5 years on.  I had hoped it was the mountings, and sure enough whatever speakers are in there are just held in place by one plastic stick thing.. don't know what it's called.

Looks in fact like the speakers have been cut (i.e. scissors) to make them fit in the hole!

But there are no screws to hold it in.. as I said, just one plastic nail kinda thing.

I'll try and take a pic to let you know what I mean.  If on the off chance somebody knows exactly what I mean, advice please on how to make it stop buzzing with the bass!
