Porsche brake conversion?

Hi I'm wanting to upgrade my brakes as I'm planning to do a few track days. I'm really lost and need some advice what is achievable

I've read around a little and found out that the common route is to use mk2 16v calipers, carriers, master cylinder ( is the servo different?) rear hubs ……. What exactly is involved in this conversion. Does any body have any links to details on this?

Ok that?s one option (probably the cheapest). I've also heard roomers that some Porsche brakes fit with minor modifications. Does anyone know what setups would work? And again any links to details on previous conversions

Another option is to go brave it and bolt on something different. I've been looking at Wilwood, Brembo, Ap racing, etc anybody got any idea what calipers off what cars would be good to use ( I cant afford to buy a new specific kit as I'm a poor student   )

I've been looking at early Boxter calipers pretty sure they will be too big  as I will be running 15" rims. 8O

Fiat coupe 20v turbo calipers (4 pot brembo ) look fittable. What companies would make carriers for me and what master cylinder would work.

A lot of ideas and questions here but I would really appreciate any help on this matter. :D

Cheers peeps

I used to own a mk1 - well I've had 2 actually - YDU 720X & SMU 420Y. Currently I drive an 98 Scotia White Mitsubishi Evolution V RS…. fancy getting another mk1 someday :D

You can use 16V Mk2 front calipers, but the sliders won't fit. You need specific Audi ones (see other post in this section).
I've heard of Volvo twin-pot calipers being used along with Rover disks, but don't have any experience with this myself.
Some people use G60 calipers on adapter plates also.
Personally I'd go for Audi calipers and 256 disks up front with std drums at the back, Passat servo and master cylinder. Should be more than enough for a light car. It is possible to 'overbrake' - you don't want to be thrown through the front window every time you press the middle pedal !

I was offered any parts i wanted from a Porsche 924 1982 vintage , the brakes from it will no way in any shape or form fit a MK1 Golf  [Audi based] .

As m6m62 says :

Will be your best route

Would a pair of front girling calipers off a G60/Audi S2 fit on a MK1 golf?

Not straight on but you can get adapters to fit the G60 calipers.

I emailed TSR this is my email and their response:

ME…….

"Hi, I have a 1982 mk1 GTI (1600)

I want to upgrade the brakes and put girling g60 calipers on the front of
my golf if this is possible. Having spoken to a few mk1 enthusiast it has
been recommended that I speak to you guys.

If you can hep me that would be great!
My wheels at present are the standard 9 bar alloys, realising these don't
give me much room for upgrade I am in the process of purchasing some BBS rm wheels 15" 7j et25 ( I only have 3 and I'm struggling sourcing a 4th ).

Can I fit girling g60's calipers under these wheels?
Please can you tell me the price for just the adapter brackets for the
brake conversion? I notice you sell g60 brake kit but it's only the caliper
adapter that I need.

What disk will I need? Is it a 280 or 285? What cars are these fitted to?

Please quote me for suitable hoses. Goodridge if you sell them.

I also need 1 X BBS RM rim 15" 7j et25. Are these available from you old?
If yes how much?

Thanks for your time and I look forward to your reply.

Kind regards
Karl"

TSR………..

"Hi Karl, I'm afraid not. To fit the brakes on you will need to change the
hubs as well, the problem with that is the bottom ball joint is different.
To be honest it's more hassle than it's worth. We do a 285mm disc kit which uses a caliper spacer bracket to take your original caliper out to the size of the specially made Black Diamond disc. The kit also comes with Pagid pads and a fitting kit and costs ?279 Inc. vat.

The wheels will not be available any more, your best bet is to keep an eye
out on E-bay.

Cheers Ross."

Ok so thats put a bit of a bananna up my exhaust!

What do I do now? I've not a clue what TSR are on about ball joints and changing hubs.

Ok I'm going to brave it and go custom!
I am thinking of fitting some Porcshe 944 turbo 4 pot calipers with a mk2 16v servo/mastercylinder.

I've had a look at there plates and its just a piece of plate with 2 holes in it cant be that difficult to fabricate….

If I get a machine shop to make an adapter plate. What do you think?

What discs are 285mm VW fitment? I would like some tarrox grooved discs made.

Hmmmm

Hi Kins

Various VW / Seat / Audi tend to use 280 or 288mm disks and do not use 285mm disks as far as i'm aware (may be wrong as usual). The 285mm kit from TSR was made for this application and you may want to fit 280/88's (with 15") wheels as they may be more freely available/cheaper. Although the 285's are fitted to TSR mk1 racer so a disc of this size should give a mk1 good stopping power.

I am having the 285mm kit with mk216v servo / MC and goodridge hoses fitted in 2 weeks so I can let you know just how good they are  :D

I cant answer your fitting questions but maybe give a specialist a ring rather than mail them. Stealth Racing are V Good and honest.
