I've a very standard Mk 1 Gti,
I'd like to fit central locking, has anybody done this using the cheap kits on e-bay or can you suggest another supplier.
Thanks.

Don't how is it in the UK but in Bulgaria they sale electrical central door locking I've put im my kar that kind of kit, and am very happy with it. Here it costs around 10-12 pound for a four door car and less for 2 :)
Try to find something similar

Do a search of the forum too. I can recall people talking about central locking before so sure you will find something

electric central door locking kits work pretty well, and are really cheap now, but you do have to cut a hole about 3 cm near the top of the door by the lock pin, it is covered by the door card but this needs to be done to connect the motor to the door lock pin. i guess the thought of cutting a hole inside the door alone would put some mk1 owners off.

If you get an alarm you can get c/l kits with them sometimes. I got my Cat1 alarm/immob fitted a while back and asked the fitter if i could get c/l fitted at the same time, he said yes for another ?30 a door.

I did it years ago, by fitting an after market central locking kit linked to and alarm.
I bought a 4 Door kit and linked the boot lock in also. As mentioned you will need to remove the door cards and attach the motor then run the wiring thro the door and under the dash. I mounted the control unit under the dash next to the fuse box, for easy access.

It really is simple and most come with instructions; if I remember correctly the solenoid (the bit that moves the lock up and down) I mounted on the inside of the door in line with the locking mechanism to prevent any visible holes.

I then run the 3rd door kit to the boot under the carpet, the 4th i just just out of the wiring to keep things tidy.

Hope this helps

I have a good alarm, I'll try an Auto Electricians for compatable kit.
