O2A Gearbox Whine

Hey, just got my 1.8T conversion finished and drive it for the first time today, it is quick!!!

Got through the MoT with no issues, but when I was driving home its developed a major whine from the gearbox when I'm accelerating in 3rd gear. Drives smooth but the noise is pretty loud!

Is this a common problem if the gearbox oil level is low?

I'm gna change the oil and put the right amount in tomorrow and try it, hopefully just an oil level problem but I don't fancy changing the gearbox so soon!

Any ideas to put my mind at rest?

Cheers
Lee

Not good, can't see low oil making it whine like that.

Sounds like one of the main bearings is on the way out.
Could also be the thrust bearing that sits behind the VW stamped plate on the end of the gearbox.

How much power is the engine putting out? And how many miles has the gearbox covered ?

One things for sure you do not want to drive it hard because if one of the main bearings lets go at speed the gearbox will be written off !!

Best bet would be to drop the box and get it properly reconditioned by somewhere like Midland VW, that way you know to have a sound box to begin with…

Thanks for the replies guys, undid the drain plug and about a teaspoon of oil came out, luckily only drove it a mile to the MoT place…

Anyway refilled with Castrol 75/90 gearbox oil and it sounds nice and quiet, let's hope I haven't done any lasting damage…

Thanks

Probably means the diff oil seals have gone. Keep an eye out of drips of oil.
