o2a gear shift mounting

hi guys
sorry to ask this coz you've probably been asked a thousand times, iam fitting a 2.0 abf engine & o2a box into my mk1 cab, just need some advise on mounting the gear shift housing & cables, does this need to be mounted in the car, or can it be fitted underneath. any pics would be helpfull

cheers

The ideal place is somewhere in between, on top of the tunnel and underneath it (to give the same gearchange location as stock). I got round it by custom fabricating this:

Random question Paul, but what do you use to cut the sheet steel?

I've been using tin snips but they are not quite beefy enough to get through thick stuff like that.

think the problem with paul making them is he had to cut the tunnel back on his so unless he kept exact measurments it would fit yours unless you made the template after you cut the tunnel get me!

looks good tho

ill be cracking the welder out soon to do some o2j mounts hopefully if i can find a cad drawing or measurements

Nice work Paul C how did you go on with the cable lengths are they spot on or a bit too long? Im in the proscess of doing a G60 conversion with o2a gearbox from a Rado do you know if golf cables are any shorter?

The cable lengths are a little too long but I routed them in such a way as they describe a more curved path, rather than the shortest route, so they should fit okay (and without an awkward bend) underneath the trim. I've heard but not confirmed that Lupo cables are a better match. There must be loads of people out there running 02A transmission who can confirm this?

Cheers for the fabrication/selling comments but everything for the car was made bespoke, and the templates thrown away. You'd need to cut the large hole and weld in any tray "manufactured" by someone else, and as far as I know most welders are also pretty good at fabricating things too, etc. So I can't really see a market out there. There's a bit of a market for "bolt on" stuff (like engine mounts for 02A) but not really "weld in" stuff.

By all means if you're local to me and want some welding/etc done, then maybe I can help out people?

I might do that "VR6 kit". At ?12,000 a pop, I only have to sell 2 a year to make ends meet.

Is there any problems with running both the cables inside the car?

Just making up a little pedestal type of thing to sit the gearknob on, then the cables running in the car then through the bulkhead?
