Newbe question Will 8" wheels fit on Cab rear ??

New to the forum so Helloooo all MK1 Owners   :D  :D  :D
Just bought MK1 Cab after years of not having a mk1 and was looking for a bit of help regarding wheels ..
I was wondering if anyone could advise me if 8" Wheels will fit on rear of a MK1 GTI Cab
OFF SET 33 running them in conjunction  185/45 R15 tyres (stretch look)

I have heard that its a big no no and will rub on in side inner arch ? ( can i use spacers to help? )
Or is it a case of cutting the outer arch back if rubbing on outer edge  :dontknow:

Any help or advice very welcome
Thanks
Jas

Have a look around the forum, this kind of question comes up very frequently. For starters (on page 1 of the "Running Gear" section):

Also try out the search engine, I am sure someone has come across the same/similar issues to you, and either figured out how to make them fit, or ditched the idea and sold the wheels on.

Hi.

Not sure the other threads really address this question!

Anyhow, from experience It should be possible to run 8" rims on the car, any wider then you'll really come unstuck. Do you have the wheels or are you thinking of buying them?

I had to work fitting my 7" zenders out from scratch, I had the issue of clearence initially with the front wheels locking up on the coilover spring platforms. This was cured with hubcentric spacers (18mm front 20mm rear).

This caused clearence issues with the rear arch lips. The 7" wheels fitted ok without spacers.

I'm not an expert on offset and how it works, maybe some where like wheel-whores forum might be of some help.

I have had to do some serious work to the rear lips and arch trims to run without scrubbing. I also run camber shims on a 1 degree negative setting….

Hope this helps a bit!

Projekt Frustration :

White 1991 Clipper. Lowered over polished zender rims, Single 40 dellorto on lynx manifold, kent cam, full stainless 'zorst / manifold, powerflex bushed and braced. Not the fastest car, but sounds super nice!

Still going after 12 years… never said it was a quick fix! Time is not my friend.

hey dude, i have 8 inch wide 13's on mine, i think the ET is pretty similar to your 33 ones, mine go on no worries, i think they conform to the legal 'tread doesnt stick out further than the arch and to wall and wheel rim stick out no more than 20mm from the arch. never had a rub but mine are 13's, 15's may be different. you should be ok though!

I think you've been misadvised in the past, on what's legal.

The 20mm figure is important, but it needs to be 20mm INSIDE the wheelarch, and that's the main part of the tyre, and the wheel (not just the tread of the tyre - that would be daft, right?). The only part allowed outside this 20mm zone is the bulge in the bottom of the tyre due to it being on the ground. And all this applies for 1986-on cars, due to the relevant type approval regulations coming in on that date. For pre-1986, there's a slightly different set of rules. Its all an interpretation anyway, because its never been properly tested in court. If you look in detail at the relevant regs, its for spray-suppression reasons. The links are on this forum somewhere, but good luck finding them, it was a couple of years back.
