Mods and insurance

Just looking for a little advice here. I don't know much about these things!

My car has a few things done to it, not by me but the previous owner. And the insurance company want to know if performance has increased.

It has a four branch manifold. Does this increase my hp? And what does it actually do?

It has a janspeed throttle body. Does this increase my hp, and again what does it do?

I had a look around the net, but can't find much info.

It's an '83, standard 1.8 8v.

Thanks!

The only way to tell is to get it on a rolling road with the bits put back to original and then with the aftermarket bits back on.

They might increase bhp, but then again your car might be delivering more or less than the 112 bhp as standard !!

Its now classed as modified and I would not expect to see more than 5 bhp increase.

Cheers,
Ade

Yeah if tuned properly, probably have a little gain, maybe +5bhp over standard. I've had this kind of issue with insurance too, I used to be insured with pretty much any tweaks/mods on the engine up to 160bhp. However, without rolling road testing the car, I could only estimate how much power the engine actually generated. I switched company and they're happy with the list of mods (no power increase specifically declared), and the car's not getting any more tweaks anyhow.

What insurance companies are best to get quotes with if you have a couple of mods on a MK1?

I have been with HIC for years - from light to high engine mods no problem.

The wife is with Footman James, light mods, nothing to the engine, more around wheels, light, brakes - no problem.

Tried Brentacre once, they do mods but they only seem to keep 9 to 5 hours which was a pain.

Right,

Well I don't think I'm bothered to go the rolling road option.

The four branch manifold makes it sound nicer, and the throttle body just improves my throttle response. And it's lowered 30mm. That's what I'll be telling them.

I'll see how I get on so.

Thanks for the replies.
