MK3 POLO GT ENGINE IN MK1 GOLF...WHAT GEAR BOX TO USE?
Hello people
I'm looking into putting a polo gt mk3 engine into mk1 golf, what do you think would be the best gear box for me to put in and replace the 4 speed box thats in now. On a budget so looking for it to be cost effective.

any 5 speed 085 box from mk2/3 polo, or mk2/3 golf. many later polos have the same type of gearbox too. you'll need to make yourself a gearbox mount though!

right good info, im also interested in this conversion with this gear box could you also put in better clocks with rev counter into a mk1 golf c and hook up the rev counter to work also?

rev counter signal is there regardless of the gearbox thats fitted, this signal comes from the coil and is present at the clocks even on poverty spec mk1 without a rev counter. its still needed for oil pressure warning circuit see
to get rev counter just change the dash and job done, though if you're usign 1.0-1.3 gearbox you need to swap your old speedo into the new dash cluster

Sorry to bother you further, could you please give me a list of parts i would need?
So far have the polo gt engine paired with the standard golf c 1.1 gear box, 4 speed.
Will i need a different clutch etc…

you can use the old clutch and flywheel, but i recommend you buy a new one if it hasnt been done for a while.
then you need a 5 speed mk2/3 polo box mount, which you cut in half and weld to the mk1 box mount. you'll see what i mean!
thats about it really, need to modify the stick housing under the car so it will let you select 5th, and you might need the 5 speed box shift rod if the old 4 speed one wont fit your box

ok thanks very much is the gearbox code for the polo gt gear box AHZ? and also do you recon that an 020 gear box would be any good or do you recon the engine will be too under powered for that?

020 box wont fit a smallblock so thats no good, the later mk3 and mk4 use a hybrid 020/085 box which will fit but some of the mount points you need are missing. if you find a box with the right ratios then it'll be fine, thats the trouble there are loads o different boxes out there with different cogs in them

hi, again i have now fitted a new cluster and swaped the speedo over from cluster to cluster as advised all pluged in ext. the dial lights ext all work but the rev counter does not? could the engine conversion have something to do with this its polo gt engine the 8v mpi one,

its mpi one 75bhp i havent done the conversion myself i bought it already done, but was still on standard clocks so i decided i wanted a rev counter. could there by something that has'nt been pluged in ext?

the rev signal comes from the ecu, i think its pin 4? if you have the mk1 coil then you can get it from the -ve terminal. if its on the mk3 polo square coil you can open the flap in the side and run a wire to the -ve pin inside. see the fusebox sticky for the fusebox pins
