physically fitting it is same as fitting 1.6-1.8 to a mk1, plenty info re gearbox, shafts, mounts and rewelding driver mount bracket on chassis leg, exhaust etc.

as for running mk3 management it depends. you can convert the mk3 loom to plug into your existing fusebox, but if its running the old ceramic fusebox i wouldnt recommend it as its quite tricky to do it. if it was me id upgrade to later mk1/cabrio blade fusebox & wiring then convert mk3 loom to work with that.

you could fit the mk3 fusebox but you would have a lot more wire splicing to do to get all the interior loom in, but as long as you know how to use a soldering iron and read wiring diagrams its not too bad. if you look at my fusebox faq on one of the other forums it covers the MK3 fusebox as well as the early/late MK1 & mk2.

fuel wise id fit mk3 polo GT/G40 lift pump, reservoir, main pump and lines. should fit a mk1 pretty easily and you wont need to change the fuel tank. tho obviously if your fillerneck/tank are in poor nick you'll want to replace them as well.

hi thanks for the reply
i have got a transponder in the key on the mk3 8 valve. how would i bypass that or adapt it into my mk1??

as long as you have a matched key and transponder box its all good, just all the loom for the transponder box and bobs your uncle. you may even be able to fit the reader coil round the mk1 ign lock, then all you need to do is get a mk3 key cut for the lock and swap the chip over.  on my mk2 i have the rclick kit with the mk4 style remote fobs these have a space in them for the  mk3 chip.

alternatively take chip out of key, tape it to reader coil then tuck the lot up behind the dash.

hi there again, is there any complications with using a tall block engine or should it just fit in the same????? i know i would need to change the engine mounts but is there anything else?? i cant remember where i read it but i remember reading that its more difficult but please help.
thanks

the only complication with tall vs. short is if you buy a 4 branch, not all of them fit. MK1 oem manifold/downpipe will fit without trouble :)

I seem to remember I needed a donwpipe spacer on mine, i used the whole wiring loom from the mk3, makes it simpler down the line with diagnostics etc and as said earlier providing you can solder/heatshrink, it's fairly simple, remember there's not too much to a mk1 loom and if you've got the whole mk3 to work from it'll look like a nightmare but won't be too tough.
Really glad i did this to mine, lovely torque

if it\'s got tits or tyres it\'s gonna be trouble

Hi i am in the middle of doing the wireing finally. What brake set up would you recommend? I have a mk2 16 valve sero and master already. Thanks

I had the 2l bottom end on my 1.8 GTI cab engine. The 16v marster cylinder and servo worked well, with standard GTI brakes, I had some drilled and grooved discs with standard pads. As long as everything is in good working order that set up should be adequate for your needs.

I have finally got it running. The next thing I am unsure about is what water pipes to use as I have to run a header tank now where as before I had a top fill rad. Would I be able to run a mk1 golf gti set of clocks? The mk3 clocks plug straight in to the fuse box but they don't on a gti?
Thanks

gti clocks will plug right into your car, the wiring is all there except for the mfa. for the pipes you will just need a header tank, pipe and the thin pipe from the rad

I'm using the mk3 fuse box and they plug straight in. My car was originally a 1.1 with the old style plug on the back of the clocks, I thought for some reason the plugs were different for some reason?

ah no then, you'll need to splice mk1 gti clocks plug onto the mk3 clock loom. you could use 90spec mk2 clocks they would almost be plug n play just a few pins differ but are easily swapped around in the clock connector, or use mk2 clock loom and just extend it so it reaches. this assumes the fusebox is on the passenger side of the car still, if its been moved to driver side then you can just swap mk2 clock loom over
