i put a mk2 gti 8v engine in my mk1 and i had to change quite alot most of which i think was because it was injection

i would imagine you will need a 5 speed gear linkage because the small engine gear box wont fit the new engine if i remember right

and deffo have to move the engine mount on the cam side further up the chassis leg, which isnt to bad with the right tools

i think youll need engine mounts off a big block mk1 (1500cc or higher) small block 1s wont fit and i think the mk3 1s are completely different!

well i have the whole car so the gear linkage wont be a problem.

its just the mounts im going to have issues with.

so if a source an engine mount from a mk 1 1.5 upwards will i need a gear box mount from the same spec?

try and sorce all the mounts 4 in total! small blocks lean forward big blocks lean backward

the gear linkage is mk1 specific im pretty sure the mk3 one wont fit im afraid

dont suppose you have any mounts or linkages knocking around. :D

I have a complete 5 speed linkage. You'll also need a steering rack from a big block, since it has a bracket that the gear linkage bolts to.

You will need a big block rad as well as the hoses, exhaust is different,I would look on here and see if there is a parts list as well as a run through on how and what to do,
Its the same old saying though,if you want a 1.8 go out and buy one as your insurance will end up being higher than getting a standard GTI anyway. And not declairing your mods only makes you uninsured !

Given that you're starting from a small block, its ambitious to do it in 4 days. For example, once the old engine's out there's welding to do on relocating the engine mount. I assume you were going to prep and paint this once it was welded? And allow the paint to dry? etc etc

Loads more stuff requires changing over than just the engine, because you're going from small block to big block. And then there's the fuelling for fuel injection….

as above, the mk3 donor is pretty much useless for any parts except the engien, gearbox and ecu/loom (if you plan to use mk3 managemnt) non of the gear linkages will fit so you need everythign includign stick and rack from 5 speed 1.5-1.8 mk1. the mount bracket on driver chassis leg needs cutting off and rewelding, you need the rad and pipes off a 1.5-1.8 mk1 plus some of the other coolant pipes too possibly. you'll need all the brackets from 1.5-1.8 manual 5 speed car too, and the 100mm driveshafts from a late cab/rocco to fit your box.

thats only the things i can think of off the top of my head
