just done this very job but in a 1989 cabby they fit straight in no changes at all but i think a tin top or older cabby you have to change the forward seat adjusters, like you said and you may have to change the seat belt clips over as the Mk2 don't fit the Mk1 belts although mine did.

Dont ask what your club can do for you, but what can you do for your club?

Put mk2 seats in mine, you definitely need to bolt on your Mk1 seatbelt holders, then swap the arms underneath to the opposite sides so you can slide them, like you said. Needs some improvisation to make it secure and solid. Ideally you'd weld another metal 'holder' piece at the back underneath, like the original one on the other side, to stop the arm flailing around! I just used the mk1 arms and other pieces to make it work. The back bench is a pig though, at least you won't need that!
This is all based on my set of mk2 seats (late GTi), I've heard tales that some may be different and more favourable to the mk1 set-up!?
