MK2 GTi 8v E Reg into MK1 GTi Convertable C Reg

I am breaking a MK2 Golf GTi ad m hoping to put the engine and box into m MK1 Cab.

The cab currently has an 1.6 Audi engine of unknown origin hence the desire to swap.

What do I need to keep to carry out this conversion?

I've had a look but can't find anything definitive on search?

The problem is the "unknown" origin nature of what you have at the moment. Can't really say what you'd need to keep, if you don't know what you have at the moment…..

The swap is possible, but depending on what you currently have might be a time consuming and/or expensive exercise, for not much gain.

Best plan would be finding out what you have, eg by reading off the engine number of the Audi engine and giving us a bit more detail, if you don't know the details post a bunch of pics and someone will be able to have a guess at it etc.

I'm hoping to get the engine number off it today, it's over at my fathers house hence the delay!

Although the car runs and has passed emissions tests it's only getting 10mpg!!!

I have been told it may be from an Audi by the guy I bought it from but he never got it to run correctly. He did think that it previously had a 1.8T in it which was removed and the current engine put in place but never really set up.

There seems to be an awful lot of wires and pipes not connected, but it is running after a fashion.

The temptation of the MK2 Digi engine is that I know what it is and where it came from, history etc.

Having said that I think if I can get the engine in the car running it may be less hassel. I suppose this is always the problem with picking up someone elses " Unfinished Project"

ie 2 wires going to the CSV ( Fifth inj) on the harnes but only one connection point?

looks like a bog std 1.6 GTI engine to me running k-jet. all the important bits for the k-jet seem to be there.

if you have the complete digi2 engine + wiring and ecu I'd fit it all if the k-jet is playing up. only tricky bit will be the wiring, a bit of fiddling will be required to get it in. if its a later cabby it will have the blade fusebox, which will make things a bit easier as then you can refer to pre-90 MK2 digifant wiring diagrams to wire it in.
plus if the mk2 is a pre-90 then the loom will actually plug straight in, but the lengths will need looking at since mk2 fusebox is on opposite side of the bay.  what you'll do is leave the mk1 lighting loom alone and just concentrate on the engine loom.

fueling wise either carefully bend the main metal mk1 fuel lines over to the driver side and push the mk2 hoses over the ends or replace the lines with some crazyquiff items. i believe he is doing digi fuel injection conversion hoses now, but you need to email him as they arnt in the web shop.

if you use the factory lines what you need to do is push the threaded bit back down the line and then puish the injection hoses as far as you can, and secure with 2 fuel line clips. the lines should have a flared end on, so if you put your fuel line clips after the flared end they wont pop off. hope that makes sence.  Alternatively if you can find barbed fittings that thread into the fuel lines you can secture the rubber pipes to these

Any ideas on why the 5th injector has 2 wires to it but only one wired in?

Also the rubber on the throttle body has something plugged off on it?

I'm probally going to try and get it going well enough for the summer then do a change in the winter. Unless it just won't run.

I've got a hold of a MK1 throttle body as i realise the Mk2 one fitted is a bit of a bodge.

Can you put the 1.6 top end on to a 3a Engine ?

If I get the Mk1 engine running is it worth doing a 1.8 Digi or Audi 3A swap?

I realise if I get the 1.6 running it should be fine but knowing it should be a 1.8, ( Or bigger) will get to me !

throttle body looks fine to me, just leave the extra switches unplugged. if anything its better than oem mk1 as bigger :)

the 5th injector looks like the black wire has snapped off, if you pull the boot back you might be able to repair. the way it is now means cold starts may be tricky, especially in the winter. apart from that everything else looks like its there, just a missmatch of late/early parts hence blocked off connection on inlet boot etc. as long as there are no air leaks you're all good.

cant fit 1.6 head on a 3a or even a 1.8 block, combustion area on it is completly flat and 1.8-2.0 is dished.  I'd just fiddle with the engine so it runs alright and leave it, dont spend too much effort. if you really wanted to keep it I'd bin the engine loom entirely and find another one in better nick, that one has been bodged all over!

Right, I'll have a go at getting the 1.6GTi engine in it running and take it from their.

It's a 88 Golf Digi and an 86 conv so from what you said i could swap the looms using the dia in the haynes drop it in and it would run.

Obviously their are a few issues such as extending the loom but that's not the end of the world. And if it's a like for like into the fues box that takes away some of the hassels. So it may be a winter project engine!

With a 3a ;)

Finally got engine code

LG210132

I'm guessing it's really, EG210132 and the E has just worn?

I'd be tempted to fix the existing, since there's SFA difference in power - EG engine should have 110bhp, the E reg mk2 GTI has 112bhp. Sure, there's more torque etc, but the difference is so small vs effort/hassle of swapping engines and wiring in Digifant ECU, etc.

Start improving mpg by measuring it properly - 10mpg seems very odd.

Yeah, 10MPG is poor, £20 of fuel lasted 30 miles so it is a worry.

The strange thing is the emmisions are not out?

I checked the tank and it's not just pouring onto the ground either
