Mk2 golf brakes on a mk1? Probably a stupid question.

Hi,

I have been offered mk2 hubs and disks and calipers for the front of my car.

I have a golf c and i dunno what size brakes they have as standard. I was thinking of converting to gti brakes from a mk1 but cant get hold of any. are mk2 gti brakes any better and will they fit?

Also looking in the haynes manual it looks like i can convert to a non servoed set up with a new master cylinder that was original equipment on pre 76 mk1 golfs. It goes in front of the pedal box instead of the horrible linkage to the servo. Anyone done this?

Thanks guys,

Will

The early mk2's had the same size disc, but the caliper carrier is different. The 16v had 256mm brakes, but the right parts are expensive to get.

Just to add…  The first of the 16v's had 239mm brakes, The change over to 256mm was nov '88.

I have put vented 239mm discs and pads to suit on mine, straight swap over, plus i bled the brakes, the braking is better and stops brake fade, but if you change the servo you will better them more, but this i have not done so i can not comment on how to do it and what it entails
