Mk2 Diesel Gearbox in a Mk1 Clipper Cab

When i had a Mk2 GTi a few years ago (RIP) I had a 2L rebore conversion done amoungst other mods.  After having done the mod the garage suggested fitting a Mk2 Diesel gearbox.

Reason being, according to them, all gear ratios remained the same except 5th, which was longer, i.e capable of higher top end speed or returned a little more fuel economy during normal driving.

Wondered if any one had done this? or confirm its possible to marry up the diesel box to a '89 GTi cabby.

16v box is the same as a 8v apart from 5th on the 16v one is longer

i would imagine a diesel box would have shorter ratios

tbh 8v or 16v are just as good

i put 200 bhp through an 8v box with no issues
