mk1 wiper upgrade - pics
I'm looking to upgrade my 1983 mk1 golf wiper motor with a mk2 golf wiper motor. I'm a bit stuck as to what wires i should join together. Does anyone know which colour wires from the connector on the car join up with the mk2 wiper motor colour wires?
The black wiper motor on the right is from the mk2 golf.
cheers

I think your right it might not be the correct one. I bought it from ebay a while back and never got time to try fitting it.
I had another search on ebay and found one similar to the mk1 motor with the bracket that attaches to the car for more support. The mk2 motor i have doesn't have the bracket either so it might be from another model.
Did your lots have the support bracket on the mk2 motor like the pic below?

The support bracket from mk2 you dont use as you can't unless you use whole assembly, it is not needed anyhow, i didn't and works perfect, mine was from my g reg mk2, wires same colour and i fitted it to an xreg mk1, my 97 citi mk1 also as same colours, but did not need to do the mod has it is done as new on the citi, you defo have wrong motor bud
Yup it's defiantly wrong. I've ended up putting the old one back now, i opened the old one up gave it little wd40 where the spindle inside the motor spins.. and then greased up the joins on the moving arms which were quite stiff.. so hopefully that helps. Only thing left is to put the old wipers back to see if cleaning and greasing has improved the old motor.
I'll continue to keep an eye on eBay for another mk2 motor.
cheers for everyones help.

Ground is at one end (where you can see the join between the pin and the casing) and the permanent (when ignition on) 12v is at the opposite far end.
The wire that goes to the red wire on the old motor goes to the red wire on the new motor, the 12v when in position 1 (normal speed wipers) goes next to the ground which leaves you with one wire for the final space…
That is from memory mind so it might be a bit wrong! (but I think it is right)…

Your motor looks like the one I got. It had different colour wiring too. Fitted just fine though.

Thanks Woza, so it must be a mk2 wiper motor but a differnt year maybe. Cos the 3 screws that connect to the wiper mechanism is in the same place.
I'll definatly give it another try using the steps you said. Cheers. 8)
The wiring socket in the motor should have the din terminal numbers, they're small but you should be able to see them, they should be 31, 31b, 53, 53a and 53b. Some motor use "31, 53, 53a, 53b and 53e" scheme. You can just match them with the original Mk1 plug and sort out the wiring.
Cheers Ecsk, I think i know what you mean.. those really really small numbers next to the terminals. I've seen that on the fuse box connectors. I'll have another closer look at the connector tomorrow to see if anything is there. That will defiantly speeds things up.
