i think one way to do this is to get rid of the oil/water thing already there and fit an aftermarket  oil cooler take of

i think the oil filter housing from a mk1 will fit, but not sure what sensors are on the abf housing.

i fitted the mk1 oil filter housing to my KR 16v and i think the block is the same, i fitted my oil pressure sender into the mk1 housing and it worked fine.

OIL COOLER

Thanks for the replies. Guess i need to go get the old 1.8 back out of storage and investigate. Was kinda hoping it was possible to use both the mk1 cooler and the abf one together somehow.I'll take a look soon.Cheers.

It is - in fact I don't know why people don't do it more often. I was going to run my 16V like this, but in the end I went for both water-oil cooler and air-oil cooler via sandwich plate and bigger cooler rad.

Result? Nice fast warmup and good oil temperatures while tootling around town, and a good capacity for cooling on trackdays and when using all the performance.

my experience with the tall blocks shows the oil filter housing from mk1 does not fit.

I wasn't sure of the ABF block myself, so I looked up on ETKA and the oil filter housing is the same for Mk2 and Mk3s, part number 053 115 417A. When a Mk2/Mk3 is fitted with a water/oil cooler (some of the lower models aren't) it has a long hollow threaded tube, if its not then a short one is fitted - this is what the oil filter screws to.

I know for a fact that the mating flange is the same for the Mk1 GTI oil filter housing, which has the takeoffs for the Mk1 air-oil cooler. So, you could use the long hollow threaded tube of the Mk2/Mk3 with the Mk1 filter housing, to run both coolers.

As stated above, I took a slightly different route, running both the water-oil cooler and a bigger air-oil cooler. This was due to concerns that my original oil cooler was too small. As I see it, the water-oil cooler can't really offer any greater overall cooling capacity, it would lower the oil temperatures but put more work on the (water) cooling system.

Sorry for the poor pic, its a real squeeze at the front of my engine! The air-oil cooler lines aren't connected in this pic, can be seen in black:
