mk1 gti (vr6 syncro???)

right then, i bought a lovely little mk1 off ebay in april 2006. after months of scouring ebay and local rags i found the one. lhasa green with unknown mileage? 3 owners, 100% standard. a little tatty but i could tell it had potential, so i went to pick it up from southampton and drove it back to norfolk and she didnt miss a beat. although the speedo was constantly off the clock thinking i was doing 120+ when i was in the slow lane doing 60 -65 behind my mates van

so got it back to norolfk and started to strip the car down ready for the overhaul (didnt know what that was gonna be yet!). found some rust on the rear nearside arch, bottom of the windscreen in the corners and on the rear slam panel. all very minor stuff really with the arch being the worst by far!

pretty much had it in storage since i have had it but it did spend a winter outside as a shell with a massive tarp over it seemed to do the job. i had to move house in may 2007 with no where to store the beast so it went over to a mates barn and has been there ever since.

heres where the fun starts - another mate recently bought a mk2 rallye that has had a RHD conversion and also a vr6 engine in there to. we have just stripped his car now and in the process of changing the engine to a 1.8t and swapping the syncro diff's for haldex numbers. see where this is going???

got the engine, looms, fusebox, clocks, front subframe, front diff, dear diff, gearbox. im thinking get a rear rallye subframe and get that on the mk1, bolt up the diff's, mk3 front subframe for the vr6 lump and with all the other bits and bobs got myself a mk1 vr6 syncro. ill just say now i know there is alot more to it than that and yes i can weld

dont wanna go crazy just want a nice cruiser with some beans if needed, i know there is handling issues with the extra weight the the vr6 but im not into throwing it into bends and i think with the battery relocated in the back and the rear drive items she will balance out ok, obviously alot heavier but still drive well.

ill upload some photos of both the cars asap.

anyone who has done either of these swaps get in touch as would love to hear how you have done it.

cheers MRschango
