MK1 GTI Mod suggestions

Hi guys,

Fancy a few mods on my Mk1 GTI (1.8 / 9A box).  Nothing too mental, just some extra torque for blasting round track days at Knockhill.  Can anyone recommend any?

Does the larger throttle body actually make much difference?

Can't be done with ?500 - well it could, if you cut corners on the job.

What else would need to be changed other than the engine?  Would a VR6 motor fit?

vr6 is a hell of a lot of work(so i've heard)……not 100% for 2ltr(i thinks its pretty much the same principal) but the 1.8 16v conversion if you buy a whole donor car you need the driveshafts from a mk2 scirocco or cabby, an aftermarket manifold/or you can modify the downpipe…..and you'll need to splice the fuseboxes/electrics together you also need one of the mounts(gearbox i think) other than that i think your good to go.

saying that yours is already a 1.8 inj so you may not need all that, you may be able to just swap the heads?

i haven't done the swap i've just read about it and intend to put a 16v in my caddy so don't take this as gospel but i hope it helps until someone more knowledgable corrects me

engine swap.

If you only have 500 quid then I think the likelyhood of being able to do a succesful and proper job of an engine swap even a 16v incl purchasing a known good engine that needs no work and all the ancillaries such as new clutch, cables etc etc is slim.   :(

If your looking at doing occasional track days, I'd spend the cash on getting the running gear up to spec (incl the brakes…), possibly get your current motor lightened / balenced fit an Audi throttle body and WUR (does make a difference) and free flow exhaust if you haven't already got one.

Good luck for whatever you decide though.

Surely 2L bottom end and some head work is doable for ?500....?

Either is do-able (staying with 8V), but not both. Would you want head work without a larger throttle body and exhaust?

Which Audi throttle body do I need?  From which car?  Does it make much of a difference…and is it a straight fit?

Got my hands on a 1.9 lump…fully balanced and lightened with a big valve head and cam.  Would be easier to fit straight in.  Thanks for the offer anyway.

How hard was your 20VT to shoehorn into your Mk1?
