mk1 gti engine into 1.5 cabriolet

Hello people. This is my first post. I just got a 1.5 1981 cabriolet and was wondering what putting a 1.8 mk1 gti engine in would entail? anyone had any experience with this? cheers

hi yeah done this before, not to hard if you have the donor car next to you,
GTI parts needed.
Fuel tank
fuel pump and accumulator and all there brackets
all fuel lines (these will probably need replacing with new ones avaliable on here!)
you may need to put new brackets on for the pipes as i think the gti ones take a different route under the car but ours was a 81 golf 1.1c may b different.
you will also need rear loom and the two engine bay looms, and if your going 1.8 you'll need dash loom mfa clocks, wiper storke and complete fuse box too.
think the grommet holes where the engine bay loom comes through are bigger on a 1.8, but i may be thinking of a later cabby we did.
quite a few wires need unpluging and then connecting back on install, digi camera or lables are advisable.
exhaust is different.
radiator is bigger on gti.
servo and brakes may need uprating too.
and anti rollbars may need fitting (may be there on cab)

but i have to say the work involved and the parts you need you may aswell just buy the gti version in the 1st place,  :dontknow:
its a good learning curve though.
good luck

cheers for that. :)  Loads of bits to change then! I've swapped the engine in my fiesta before but that was like for like.
The engine in the golf has done 150k so i was just thinking it would be good to maybe collect all the bits before the inevitable! but sounds like quite a few to get…
