What are the symptoms which make you think the engine is dead?

well its back firing out the carb with a puff of smoke thers a massive oil leake nd looks as oil has been spraying ot from where the carb it attatched to the engine nd other parts of the engine, it will run for a little bit then starts cutting ot on idle n hard starting etc

I'd be tempted to replace like-for-like. There's no point trying to 'build' a GTI style car. If you want a GTI, buy one not build one.

that's not really going to offer you much performance over your mk2 1.3 engine - plus you'll have to cut the driver's side engine mount from the chassis leg and move it back a few inches and weld it back on, you'll need a steering rack from a big block mk1 (1.5+) or have to modify your current rack to suit. you'll also need the gear linkages and driveshafts from the 1.5 as well.

like paul said, a like for like swap is probably your best bet. those mk2 small blocks are normally pretty bombproof.

engines that can go in on the same mounts:

polo GT
polo 1.4 16v
polo 1.6 16v

also, if you wish to run the 5 speed gearboxes with these polo engines you'll need to custom fabricate the gearbox mount for the passenger side.
