mk1 golf...mk2 gti lump?

could anyone help me out before i go buying this engine please? will the mk2 gti lump fit in my mk1 golf, are there certain engine mounts i can buy for it to drop straight in? thanks!

It will fit but its less hassle if you go for pre 1987, since these are K-Jet, the later ones are Digifant. There's still a bit of swapping over of stuff to do, eg exhaust and inlet manifolds.

What model of golf do you have? If its a big block, you unbolt its engine mount off of the side and use it on the mk2 engnine, it will bolt on in the same place.

I thought you had a GTI and needed a replacement engine of a similar type.

If you're starting from a 1.1, there is a LOT more you need to change. Do you want me to list the items which you need to change, or the ones which you don't (the list is about the same length!)

PS many of the items are simply because a GTI engine is more than twice as powerful as the 1.1. Worth bearing this in mind. You might already have suitable mods, eg suspension wheels tyres etc

Forgot to add, there is a demand for unmodified 1.1 and 1.3s due to low insurance. I bet it would work out more economic selling the small block and buying a GTI, you'll benefit from all the other GTI stuff like instruments, trim, etc too and it will be worth more on resale.

Can you weld? you need to cut off, then reweld in a different position, the engine mount.

the bracket is easy to line up, there are markings on the chassis legs which you can use. do some searching there are loads of build and info threads on this, with pictures and everything ;)

dont forget the gearbox and complete gear linkage will need sorcing, fuel pump, reservoir, lift pump etc and lines. you have a long list of stuff to get
